Virus Warnings could probably be called the original e-mail chain letters. In the early days of the 'net, when most people were discovering its wonders for the first time, few understood its limitations and threats.

These hoaxes prey on users who have little knowledge about technology and how it works. They frequently describe terrible consequenses that are not really possible, quoting "official" sources like AOL, IBM, or Microsoft and desperately urging you to forward them on to everyone you know.
