Break the Chain Let Us All Bow Our Heads

Exclusive (10/12/2001) President George W. Bush is well-known as a religious man who has, on several occasions since September 11, 2001, asked Americans of all walks of life to pray with him. But, has he created a "Presidential Prayer Team" to support his efforts?

The Office of the Presidential Prayer Team has asked that I relay this information to my friends and colleagues so that it will reach its goal of enlisting 2.8 million people (1% of the population) to pray daily for the President--especially in our current crisis. I recommend that you join this effort. There is no fee or obligation. Just sign up and you'll receive a window decal in the mail, plus e-mail updates on the specific prayer needs of the President and his Cabinet.

The first question I get is "Is this group real?" The answer is yes. confirms that it is a private foundation that is in no way connected to, or endorsed by the Office of the President. Their web site seems cleverly designed to imply a federal connection and the disclaimer that the organization was not connected to the president was conspicuously absent the first time I checked the site.

If you're a person who genuinely believes in the power of prayer, do you really need and organization, a web site and a window decal to know that your prayers are making a difference? Does an organization need to have your name and address on file for your prayers to be heard? Other than the statement that "All information is kept confidential," the web site lacks adequate privacy protections to guarantee your name and address won't be sold or shared with others. If you want to pray, just do it and Break this Chain!
