Bow Your Heads... YES SIR!Date Added: Feb. 18, 2004
Once again, we see the ACLU accused of taking a hardline stance against any intermingling of government and religion. As usual, we find this is a hoax, drawn from a misunderstanding of the ACLU's policies on religious freedom. ACLU Upset At Marines
If you look closely at the picture above, you will note that all the Marines pictured are bowing their heads. That's because they're praying. The incident took place at a recent ceremony honoring the birthday of the corps, and it has the ACLU up in arms. "These are federal employees," says Lucius Traveler, a spokesman for the ACLU, "on federal property and on federal time. For them to pray is clearly an establishment of religion, and we must nip this in the bud immediately." When asked about the ACLU's charges, Colonel Jack Fessender, speaking for the Commandant of the Corps said (cleaned up a bit), "Screw the ACLU." GOD Bless Our Warriors Please send this to people you know so everyone will know how stupid the aclu is Getting This note bears a striking resemblance in tone to an earlier chain letter that accused the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of opposing crosses in military cemeteries. That one was originated as a joke to demonstrate an extreme that the ACLU might go to. This one is, similarly, only a joke - one that many have missed, because they fear the organization may soon go this far. The ACLU's stance on religious observations on government property and involving government workers is highly criticized and frequently misunderstood. What rankles most is the ACLU's insistence that the First Amendment guarantee of free religion includes the choice to follow no religion, thus any tolerance or support by the government of any one religion is seen as a violation. The ACLU represents individuals. It would only get involved in the situation described above if, say, one of the soldiers objected to being ordered to pray in a manner that was contrary to his or her personal beliefs. While I have been unable to find the source of the above photo, I have been able to confirm that the supposed reaction of the ACLU and the response from a Marine spokesman are total fabrications. The current U.S. Marines Commandant of the Corps (CMC) is General Michael M. Hagee. I can find no mention of this incident or this statement on his web site, nor can I find any reference to a spokesperson for the CMC by the name "Colonel Jack Fessender." Further, the ACLU has issued a statement in response to this chain letter in which they state "we have no knowledge of this event nor have we ever had a spokesperson by the name of Lucius Traveler."
