(4/13/2001) Yet another entry into the "just forward this to get something free" hall of shame is this chain that offers a free case of fine champagne for your efforts.
SAMPLE CHAIN LETTER TEXT
To all you Champagne Lovers....
Send this on to 10 people and cc to firstname.lastname@example.org and Veuve Clicquot France will contact you directly for your address and ship you a case of free champagne in 3 weeks. Obviously building up their databases, but what have you got to lose?
END CHAIN LETTER TEXT
This letter doesn't follow the common "something for nothing" pattern of alluding to some magical e-mail tracking technology, but that, unfortunately, doesn't make it any more valid.
I contacted Veueve Clicquot and they were quite eager to put this ridiculous claim to rest. A representative from their U.S. operation asked that we post the following statement for the benefits of our readers and their customers:
"An email hoax is currently circulating regarding an offer of free bottles of Veuve Clicquot Champagne (in exchange for 10 email addresses).
"This offer was not initiated or authorized by Champagne Veuve Clicquot. Even though the appropriate authorities have been informed, the chain email continues to circulate. This is unfortunately beyond our control.
"We truly regret any inconveniences or disappointment this may have caused you.
Champagne Veuve Clicquot"
A similar advisory (in French, of course) is posted at the Veuve Clicquot France website. Break this Chain!
