Armchair Activism Chains
Armchair Activism chain letters are those that encourage you to "sign" a petition or participate in a boycott to effect change. They are, unfortunately, typically based on the misguided belief that the sheer numbers of online denizens will be enough to influence social, political or economic policy with very little effort by individuals. They take many different forms, but all have the underlying flaw that activism requires action and few things are more inactive than sending e-mails to our friends. To learn more, read my Primer on Armchair Activism.
